About Xylitol
Clinical studies show that xylitol gum may reduce the risk of tooth decay, halitosis (bad breath) and gum disease.
Xylitol has also been implicated in decreasing bad bacteria in the digestive tract which allows space for good bacteria to flourish.
Other research indicates Xylitol may have anti-aging effects on the body.
Xylitol is a product of any plant with a pulpy woody content.
It has the sweetness of cane & beet sugar but it doesn’t raise blood glucose or trigger insulin release like these sugars and artificial sweeteners can.
Xylitol doesn’t have the strange chemical aftertastes of artificial sweeteners, stevia and monk sugar.
Nor does it have the cooling aftertaste or fluid retaining tendencies of Erythritol.
Xylitol inhibits bad oral and gut bacteria and their acids by starving them.
Bacteria consume xylitol and it fills their metabolic sector normally taken by fructose.
Bacteria can’t metabolize this xylitol and so they starve to death.
Xylitol also attracts calcium and so plays a role in tooth remineralization.
Why Chewing Gum?
Chewing xylitol gum regularly is great way to expose the oral cavity and digestive tract for longer than eating mints or using as normal sugar (although those are also great).
Chewing also promotes saliva flow which keeps up turnover of antibacterial saliva in the mouth while flushing away proteins and other wastes from food, gums and oral tissue.
Chewing gum regularly also helps strengthen jaw muscles and promotes jaw bone maintenance. This helps to decrease the appearance of aging or looseness in the lower face.
